On September 16th local time, Danrami Hajo, the secretary of the Education Bureau of the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, announced at the unveiling ceremony of the 14th "Chinese Corner" at Tudun Wada Government Secondary School in Abuja that Chinese has been officially included in the foreign language teaching curriculum for high schools across Nigeria.
This is one of the important measures taken by the Nigerian federal government this month after completing the comprehensive revision of basic and high school education curricula. The Nigerian Education Research and Development Council issued a notice on September 8, clearly stating that the new curriculum will be officially implemented starting from the 2025-2026 academic year. Chinese, French, and Arabic will all become optional international language subjects for high school students.

Hao Yu emphasized at the ceremony that Mandarin Chinese is the language with the largest number of speakers worldwide and has become an important communication tool in the fields of business, education and tourism. Promoting Chinese language education and deepening cultural exchanges between China and Nigeria is a wise choice for Nigeria. Currently, the Federal Capital Territory has established 14 Chinese language centers in several middle schools, which have greatly facilitated the interaction between Chinese and Nigerian education and culture.
In his speech, Yang Jianxing, the counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, stated that 12 years ago, the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria and the Education Committee of the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria jointly established the first Chinese language corner. Today, this Chinese language corner has developed into a bond connecting Chinese and Nigerian cultures and a bridge that narrows the distance between the hearts of young people from the two countries. The Chinese diplomatic mission in Nigeria will continue to support cooperation between China and Nigeria in areas such as culture and education, and help build a China-Africa community with a shared future.
