1                     Ethiopia is emerging as a leader in the African electric vehicle transformation. The rapid increase in the adoption of electric vehicles in the country can be attributed to the following reasons:

Strong policy support: In January 2024, Ethiopia became the first country in the world to completely ban the import of internal combustion engine vehicles, creating a favorable market environment for the development of electric vehicles. In addition, the government offers comprehensive tax exemptions for electric vehicles. Electric vehicles only need to pay a 15% tariff, and the import tariffs for the components of electric vehicles assembled in Ethiopia are "almost zero". It also provides tax deductions and other fiscal incentives to encourage local assembly companies to enter the market.

The energy cost advantage is significant: The electricity cost in Ethiopia is approximately 0.01 US dollars per kilowatt-hour. With an energy structure where hydropower accounts for over 90% of the total, this provides a natural advantage for electrification. In contrast, the price of fuel keeps rising. From January 2023 to January 2025, the price of gasoline rose from 0.4 US dollars per liter to 0.8 US dollars, an increase of 100%. This makes electric vehicles highly attractive in terms of usage costs.

Market demand growth: Ethiopia has a population of 120 million, and the automotive market has huge growth potential. With the rapid growth of the middle class, the demand for new cars is also surging, providing a broad market space for the popularization of electric vehicles.

International cooperation contribution: International electric vehicle manufacturers and suppliers have shown great interest in the electric vehicle market in Ethiopia. Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has collaborated with local companies to launch models, and Chinese enterprises such as GAC and Yutong have also established assembly plants in Ethiopia. These collaborations have promoted the development of the electric vehicle industry in Ethiopia.

By the beginning of 2025, the number of electric vehicles in Ethiopia had reached approximately 100,000, accounting for nearly 10% of the country's total of about 1.2 million vehicles. The government plans to have 500,000 electric vehicles on the roads by 2030, with the goal of replacing 95% of fuel-powered vehicles. However, Ethiopia also faces some challenges during its transition to electric vehicles, such as high costs of electric vehicles and insufficient charging infrastructure.4
